Wi: future offensive air system not cancelled

In 1994 the MOD starts its search for a replacement for the tornado. The result was a single unflyable full scale mock up. What would it take for the MOD to equip the RAF/FAA with replica?

Avoiding the early 1990s recession and the budget deficit of "only" £50 billion would have helped even more. Then HM Forces might still be the size set by the Options For Change defence review. It would also help if some of the RAF's programmes since 1990 had been completed on time and nearer the estimated cost.

Would britain not being allowed into the f35 program help?

Why would the US deny the UK? More over look at what numbers of squadrons the UK is now able to field, and explain to me how that would be cost effective? I mean in the class of the Tornado I can't see how the RAF and FAA get together given the CVF date is far off, so the FAA needs a Harrier replacement, while the RAF needs a strike bomber/fighter.

AFAIK the RAF wanted to buy the A-12 Avenger II. So that aircraft has to avoid the problems that led to its cancellation. If the aircraft the RAF ordered were carrier capable then my guess is that the CVFs would be designed to operate a mix of F-35s and A-12s.

Weren't the A-12's issues rather large? And if it had been built would we see the 35 as is?

Yes they literally were because it was overweight and over cost AFAIK. But if the A-12 had survived then maybe fewer roles would have been crammed into the F-35 which might have avoided some of its problems.

Perhaps, but unless the B restrictions are put into a different design the 35 is still going to have issues I would think, also it would get into issues like how to support UK industry (BAE) unless the US gave some of the work of the A-12 to them which I doubt.
