WI: French Revolution Without American Revolution?

This is something I've thought about, what would the French Revolution be like without an American Revolution? While it would definitely be a very different revolution, I do think that the fiscal crisis and the incompetence of King Louis XVI laid the groundwork for revolution before Lexington and Concord. How would this revolution go and would it be successful?

This is a tough one. Personally I think that, without the Revolutionary war, the French revolution becomes much less likely. Remember that, while French finances were in a bad place before the 1777, it was their participation in the conflict and funding of the Americans that destroyed them. France spent around 1.3 BILLION livres in debt during the war, thanks to supplying the Americans with money, troops, weapons, uniforms and other matérial, and that's not counting how much was spend on their direct war with the British outside of North America. So without all that money going to the Americans, French finances are more stable and could recover. After all, its not the first time France has been in a terrible economic situation (see the early reign of Louis XV) and its not the first time its recovered (again see early reign of Louis XV).

So I'd argue no American Revolutionary war = no French revolution. Or at least a very delayed one or very different from what we saw OTL.

Thande's Look To The West has the *French Revolution be based more heavily on the Corsican Revolution, as well as happening later. Just because the American Revolution doesn't happen doesn't mean that there isn't something else that can inspire it.

But the French, far from being inspired by the Corsican Revolution, crushed it, forced Paoli to flee into exile, & of course annexed the island. I’m afraid there’s nothing much that’s very inspirational here.

America was not only the only place where a rebellion against tyranny broke out in the late 19th Century- it was about the only place where it could have happened.Or as the illustrious Mr Paine so aptly put it, freedom has been hunted around the globe- Europe regards her as a stranger, & England has given her warning to depart.
