IOTL Samuel de Champlain allied with the Wyandot (aka Huron) and some Algonquian tribes against the Mohawk during a war party in 1609 in order to strenghten trade relationships with the former groups. However, the resulting decades-long small scale warfare against the Iroquois Confederacy transformed them into a permanent adversary of the French, massively hindering their trade presence and the development of the colony through it's entire existence.
What, do you think, would have happened had Champlain realized the superiority of an alliance with the Iroquois and they had actually accepted such an alliance? Let's assume that the French will stick to their rather trade oriented governance of the region.
Bonus question: Would it have been feasible to actually include the Wyandot, who also formed a loose confederacy, into the Iroquois Confederacy (as they did later with the Tuscarora) ?
Yes, the two groups were traditional adversaries, but they shared some parts of their culture and their languages were related. Could Champlain possibly have brought them together on the promise of prosperity through trade, instead of - effectively - causing centuries of war between the Confederacy and the French?
