WI: Freddy Krueger: 1980's Child Molester

The original concept of Freddy Krueger is him being a molester (Like the remake version did), not a killer.

There was reasons why "Child Molester Freddy" was unused, including Craven's belief that it may garner protests or such.

What if, the original Freddy, played by Robert Englund, is a molester instead, not a murderer?

I can't imagine the Nightmare on Elm Street series taking off. He's a far better character as a psychopathic killer who targets teens than just a creepy generic child rapist.

I dont think critics or audiences would accept the abuse angle, even in a conservative 1984.
Eh? Really? So Jackie Earle Haley's take on Freddy, on 1984 is completely unacceptable?

I can imagine it getting a similar response to what Ebert gave to Manic (obviously not the same thing, not by a mile, but bear with me), as in it'd be seen as something excessively icky and rather tasteless. There'd be less of a fandom around him, for sure, but I don't think it'd kill the franchise. Maybe no NoES to nth, but I think it'd do well enough to get one or two sequels.
