WI: France wins the War of Spanish Succesion

What would happen if France won the war and had a personal union with Spain?

Personal union was not France's war goal, so it will not happen. A french victory may mean more territories under spanish control in Italy, while the spanish royal family would keep his inheritance rights in France. But this a mere possibility of PU, not a certainty. OTL, the Borbón (Spanish) pretender to the French throne was never the monarch of Spain, but a cousin, at a time when the monarchy was already abolished in France.

The answer can but be : it depends on the extent of the victory.

But as Cornelis said, no personal union was at stake. It would even have been counterproductive.

A crushing victory could imply the Spanish Bourbon king Philip V retains all the spanish Habsburgs' inheritance and gives the Spanish Netherlands to his grandfather Louis XIV of France as a compensation for its victorious support in the war.

And France would annex Piedmont-Savoy, Brisgau and Dutch Brabant.

The french may also retain their North American holdings of Acadia and Newfoundland.

There would be no asiento for Britain.

There may also be a possible long run side effect : without the the OTL victories that turned the first duke of Marlborough into a British national hero, his heirs would not enjoy the high prestige they enjoyed OTL.

This depends on the degree of the French victory. Blenheim is often used in TLs for this although there are other chances. A siege of Vienna or an invasion of Britain are not plausible IMO but it's possible for the French to overrun the Allies' armies in Flanders, northern Italy and Spain. Naples, Sicily, Sardinia and Milan actually did swear fealty to Philip V but were occupied later by the Allies. Anyway, let's presume the Bourbons win this way.

Philip V gets Spain, Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, Duchy of Milan, State of Presidi and the Spanish Netherlands. He could cede something to back to his grandfather, maybe some bordering cities in the Southern Netherlands

France could also get some cities on the Rhine, Breisgau or some other territories and in Italy it could be Duchy of Savoy and Nice. If British take some regions in North America like Acadia it would be returned. Asiento would also go to France weakening Britain even further.

Other important butterflied could be that maybe the Duke of Burgundy or his oldest son survives 1711 removing the possible succession crisis in France and maintaining the Franco-Spanish alliance in the future decades

EDIT: also, maybe France takes Lorraine and compensates the Duke with Milan or the ANL

It can be argued that France did win the war OTL, maybe not completely, but Louis XIV achieved his primary objective of putting his grandson on the Spanish throne.

If you want a more decisive triumph, maybe have Louis not antagonize England or the Netherlands in the 1701-02 period, so that it is just a Bourbon-Hapsburg war. The Bourbons probably can keep more of the Spanish inheritance that way.
