WI: FR3 was privatized instead of TF1

In OTL, then Prime Minister Jacques Chirac decided to privatize one of three French television channels (all state-owned) in 1986; at first, FR3 (France Régions 3, now France 3) was the first choice to be privatized. Instead, TF1 was chosen. In 1987, Groupe TF1 was formed after its privatization, and the major stakeholder is Bouygues, named after its founder, businessman Francis Bouygues (obviously).

So here's the challenge: Instead of TF1, FR3 was privatized. Will it affect the two remaining channels (TF1 and Antenne 2)? Will we expect a reorganization of the French public television?

My knowledge there is pretty limited

The issue I see is that France 3 is specialized in regional news - a local network dealing with what happens deep in the French countryside.
I can't see how this could interest Bouygues or more generally, private investors.
On the other hand, TF1 as we know it (OTL) has this guy - Jean Pierre Pernaut (TF1 very Kent Brockman, and you need a Kent Brockman for a privatized FR3. Remember Eye in Springfield ? figure that for a privatized FR3)

If France 3 gets privatized, it also let France 2 and TF1 as redundant, generalist public networks, so perhaps one of the two will also end privatized.
Unless of course either TF1 or France 2 takes over the (honest) local news job left by the privatized FR3.

Incidentally, had Bouygues stuck with the promises he made to the French government before the privatization, TF1 would have been very much like Arte, culture-wise. Bouygues promised the best, and we truly had the worse - Club Dorothée, real TV, things like that.
I'm very confident that whatever channel given to Bouygues, he would be very able to turn it into the whale shit TF1 become

That's still OK; we 're both the same.

A network of regional stations, actually. Just like British ITV, but more centralized.

If France 3 gets privatized, it also let France 2 and TF1 as redundant, generalist public networks, so perhaps one of the two will also end privatized.

Well, according to the French Wikipedia article on TF1, Antenne 2 (now France 2) was singled out because of all the three channels, A2 was the leading in terms of audience and image, so it's either FR3 or TF1 OTL.

Incidentally, had Bouygues stuck with the promises he made to the French government before the privatization, TF1 would have been very much like Arte, culture-wise.
If there's a reorganization of French public television in this challenge, so let's see...

You know what, the whole world in general lamented the proliferation of trash on television nowadays (in my country, we suffered for a very long time, from lesser evil to worst). So I understand. Bouygues, like every commercial enterprise who controlled a medium like a television network, only cares for profit and ratings.

privatized France Régions 3, make no sense
it's a network specialized in regional news, Cultural experiments and political debate.
(it was on FR3 were the French Green Party ridiculously there self to be beyond repair)

had Jacques Chirac his way to day french Tv major network would look something like this:

FRANCE 1
State TV official channel of French republic and it's President

FRANCE 2
the cultural channel and political debate. it take over allot of FR3 regional office in France.

FRANCE 3
Private network focus on Sport, Gameshow, Crime, Realty docu, soap operas, Anime and pornographic movies after midnight.

FRANCE 5
French version of CNN focus on News and french issues

ARTE
French-German cultural channel

Cannal+
French pay-tv network with almost identically program offer like FRANCE 3

FRANCE 3
Private network focus on Sport, Gameshow, Crime, Realty docu, soap operas, Anime and pornographic movies after midnight.
I think the after midnight programming should be arranged like this:
Sunday to Friday - Anime and old movies
Saturday - Pornographic movies

FRANCE 5
French version of CNN focus on News and french issues
Like France 24 OTL?

Personally, I highly doubt that TF1 would become an highbrow culture channel. It wasn't before 1987 and France 3 is not really an highbrow culture channel.

TF1 would be more regionalized to compete with FR3, would still air religious programmes like "Jour de Signeur" - The day of the Lord (now on France 2) but also a lot of entertainment and sports. FR3 could in fact be in more trouble as it was too regionalized. Channels like La Cinq and M6 would be stronger on the market....

So, in your opinion, Mediaset's La Cinq will survive. How about Canal+?

Canal+ became big, by buying the broadcast rights of french Football league and keep there hands on it.
it went for several years so on, that FR3 and others had show the french rugby league instead.

also gain Canal+ with there production company PATHE, control over French Movie making and show there French blockbuster, on there Pay channel first on TV, second by TF-1 or France 2.

La Cinq was created by politician Jérôme Seydoux and Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, as first french Private TV channel in 1986 even before privatization of TF-1.
because La cinq was run by a politician and financed by a shady Italian, the french government made several attempt to stop the broadcast, so Jérôme Seydoux and Silvio Berlusconi move out.
and sell La Cinq to groupe Hachette (newspaper) who put Robert Hersant in charge 1987.
sadly Hersant made very bad choosing on the Programs and there broadcast time, also he start serie of disastrous purchase of new equipment, studios and a new Office building for the channel.
groupe Hachette had buy la Cinq for news program something Hersant reduced to 5 minute spots during programs (in nation were normal TV New in time take 45 minute long)
during the time former Antenne 2 workes try to save the channel by changing the Program, only to drive away the last loyal viewers.
with ratings under 10% and spending of one billion french franks, groupe Hachette pulled the plug in 1992 La Cinq stopped broadcast.
irony Silvio Berlusconi, proposed to save La Cinq under his control, but French Government made allot of Pressure that not happened,
so in 1992 La Cinq literally fade away on TV screens on april 2, 1992.
there were salvage attempts by TNT network and later by AB group on Studios & equipment of La Cinq but in end the French Government reopened the Channel as La Cinqueme aka France 5

Personally, I highly doubt that TF1 would become an highbrow culture channel. It wasn't before 1987 and France 3 is not really an highbrow culture channel.

you not see the Night program of FR3 before 1987 ?
after 23:00 FR3 show exclusive culture programs, experimental / cult movies or Anthology, like René Laloux Animation Anthology series "De l'autre côté"
