WI: First Crusade is a disaster

What if the army of the Prince's Crusade was annihilated either outside Nicaea or at Dorylaeum?

If the First Crusade was such an unprecedented disaster, what would that do to the mindset of Europe and more locally, to the Turkish Rum Sultanate? Would they be able to cross into Europe sooner?

That would be a terrible defeat for the West and would certainly put a damper on Crusading East for a bit. I don't see it putting an end to incursions into the Holy Land, Venice and Genoa are still very interested in the Levantine coastal ports.

In regard to the Byzantines they are in a bad position if Nicaea is not retaken. The Turks probably won't push into Europe and judging by the Komnenos rulers abilities they will stave off defeat.

There probably wouldn't be any more large-scale expeditions to the Holy Land. Instead we might see TTL's crusading energies focused closer to home, in Spain, Prussia and Sicily -- which in the long run might be better for the Christians, as they'd actually be able to hold the gains they made in these areas.
