WI Final Fantasy became Sega exclusive?

I've always been interested in the development of FF7 into the famous first 3D entry of the series, especially its early stages in 2D for the SNES (!) and the dispute with Nintendo over CDs that led to Square abandoning ship for the PlayStation. Was Square destined to work with Sony? That might not be the case if:

1) Square jump to the Sega Saturn instead, allowing Square to work with a more experienced video game publisher than Sony.

Now, this might not be enough of a "killer app" to keep Sega competitive, but this and the next FF games should slow its decline long enough for, say, Microsoft to take an interest...

In addition, we could see an interestingly different FF7 if the good old Wiki is anything to go by. We could see ideas that ended up in Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve IOTL; a "hot-blooded" Detective Joe in either New York City or Midgar; an earlier Edea Kramer; and some even crazier ideas (see "What Could Have Been"). What do you all think?

1) Square could break with Nintendo over a different issue and jump to OTL's Sega Saturn, but we still have the issue that it only used cartridges.
2) Sega changes the Saturn to have only a CD drive, allowing Square to work with a more experienced video game publisher than Sony.

I thought the saturn was a disc based system. Also if you want it to have better success for the saturn, have the new sonic xtreme come out and maybe have backward compatibility with older systems via a new power base convertor.

The Saturn was Disc Based since its inception, you think about 32X.

IN OTL the franchise Sony practically found the whole 7, maybe SEGA moneyhat Square being fast.

Thanks for your feedback (and I'm sorry about that one big mistake )!

I'd thought about Sonic Xtreme too, especially since the gameplay demo looks pretty good. I'm not sure, however, if it alone could have saved Sega. Also, how much more time and money would backward compatibility cost? The Saturn was already a hundred dollars more at launch than the PlayStation.

Sorry, but I'm a little confused about what you mean by finding the whole 7. Do you mean that only Sony could have given FF the huge public exposure and fame/infamy that it has now? Or could Sega have received the same visibility and profits in an ATL? Thanks again for your correction!
