From the mid 50s to 1973 Australia stationed an infantry battalion in Malaya/Malaysia/Singapore on a 2 year cycle accompanied by their families if married, and in line with British practice these battalions stationed were liable for a 4 month operational combat deployment. 3 RAR which was stationed in Malaysia Jul 63 – Aug 65 did Confrontation Ops in Borneo 22Mar – 28 Jul 65 and 4 RAR stationed in Malaysia Aug 65 – Sep 67 did Confrontation Ops Borneo Apr -30 Aug 66. These battalions were not backfilled in Malaya while on operations in Borneo.

8 RAR was stationed in Malaysia Aug 67 – Apr 69 (and went to Vietnam) in Nov 69, 1 RAR in Apr 69 – Jul 71 and 6 RAR in Jul 71 – Dec 73 the latter two having just returned from Vietnam the previous month.

WI these battalions did the same 4 month tour of Vietnam while stationed in Malaysia? If all 3 btns went this would give the Army the equivalent of a battalion/year for 'free' so to speak, or at the very least 8 months.
