WI: FBI Special Agent Nixon

ASB. Nixon would be loyal to Hoover, and Johnson had a very close relationship with Hoover-Hoover only gave FDR the same kind of loyalty and trust that he did Johnson. They were neighbors for years and Hoover would often babysit or play with the Johnson girls, etc.

Then get JFK and Nixon to work together to expel JEH maybe have Hoover assassinated in 1963 instead? ;)

Um... no... just no. Nixon wouldn't go along with that, and Kennedy wouldn't suggest to begin with. JFK liked and valued Edna's services very much, even though he didn't trust him. And Hoover respects the Presidency, even if sometimes not the man it in it.

Nixon would probably go onto the Navy like OTL, but then things really change. If he never chanced upon that political career by being stuck in California as a small time lawyer... one thing he stressed in one of the few relatively unguarded conversations he had with people other than Pat and the girls was how *random* it all was. Of course, he'd probably never meet Pat in this timeline.

Nixon as J. Edgar's number two man would be a sight to behold. And knowing Nixon, I could see that. Wonder what happens with Hiss?

If Nixon resigns from the FBI to go into the Navy, he wont be welcome back into the Bureau after the war. Hoover detested agents who left the fold voluntarily to serve elsewhere. He obstructed ex-agents from returning to the FBI after their military service up. Assuming he gets back in, his career is unlikely to prosper. Hoover will always see him as a sell-out and a turncoat. And Heaven forbid he do something like join the OSS! Hoover will blacklist him for life.

You know, it's quite possible that this Nixon just has a boring and minor career as an FBI agent like any other.
