WI on febuary the 2nd 1990 George H W Bush died in a car crash and his VP Dan Quayle took over? Could Dan hold the presidency? Who would be his democratic competition?

Yeah, we need more detail. Depending on which February 2, you may or may not get a less peaceful fall of Communism - or worse - for example.

This may entirely butterfly away the August Coup as the plotters will be less likely to try to overthrow Gorbachev if a bumbling gaffe-prone fool (in the perspective of the plotters) is leader.

I think Quayle would intervene in Iraq, perhaps going so far as to attempt to overthrow Hussein. The rally-round-the-flag effect and a desire to not change horses in midstream would give him reelection.

On 2 Feb 1990, President GHW Bush had a Q&A session at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville so he was travelling that day.

The 1992 Republican Presidential Primary would probably involve a stronger challenge by Pat Buchanan - however President Quayle would not be subject to the "Read My Lips" controversy over taxes that President GHW Bush had after the 1990 Budget agreement which occurred in November 1990 (negotiations began in the summer of 1990). In fact, there may not be the same budget agreement as VP Quayle was supposedly opposed to the tax increases contained in the 1990 Budget agreement.

EDIT: added link to website citing Q&A session, not speech.

Really? Wow. That gave my question more plausability since he was actually traveling lol. Imma google it but i'm guessing those tax increases we're mainly for the middle class and poor? fjihr would Quayle have the support for an Iraq invasion?

How likely is it that a President, who is always traveling in a heavily reinforced car in a large convoy, is actually killed in an accident? I see this type of POD frequently, but it doesn't strike me as very likely. Stairs would probably be more fatal.

Well, in 6 months Hussein invades Kuwait, so there's that...

Reality is the economy is going to have a recession with a subsequent slow recovery and he will lose just as Bush did. It's hard to see him doing better as he never distinguished himself as being more potent than Bush.
