WI Ethiopian-Eritrean War Spreads

What would be the most likely way for the border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea that began in 1998 to flare up beyond what it did IOTL and involve neighboring countries? IMHO I can see Yemeni intervention as being plausible, due to its differences with Eritrea over the Hanish Islands. What about Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Djibouti?

How would this change history and what would such a war look like?

I dubt Yemen joins in, they seams to have their own issues. However, it might be possible to see something like what is going on now in the same area with the refugees.

If somalia were in something resembling one piece, then I can see them interveing by invading Ethiopia. The two countries fought each other in the ogaden war in 1977-8, and Somalia would still want the ogaden region. With a mass of Ethiopian troops on the Eritrean border, a functional Somalia might intervene on the behalf of the latter. Closer to our times, any long standing local or international presence in the Somali civil war would help spread the conflict, because of the Ethiopian intervention on the behalf of the government.

Sorry for the thread necromancy.

The best chance of an escalation would be in the stalemate period, when the two sides were shopping out their agendas. The Oromo Liberation Front in Somalia might make for a nice flashpoint, and could drag Ethiopia into Somalia, diverting forces to the south of that country.

Maybe this troop presence would spark confrontation with Kenya? Doubtful, but still a possibility.
