WI: Enlarged Texas Borders

So, could Texas realistically keep its land claims once joining the US or was it destined to have to give them up and reduce its size to something similar to its present territory? If it could be, how would an expanded Texas have developed and how would its role in the US be different?

If the POD is basically the compromise of 1850, Texas was destined to lose that land because of the Republic's crushing debt. However it's important to note that the upper panhandle is very close to the South Pass on the Oregon Trail. If Texas could put some sort of toll booth up there, It could generate some substantial revenue. The Santa Fe Trail and Bent's trading posts will also be very valuable assets to the State of Texas.

They would have no ability to enforce any tolls. People would just laugh at them and walk on by.
"You don't want a pay the toll? Well that sure is a shame. Nice big wagon you got there stranger. Would be unfortunate if someone... BURNED IT WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING!" :D

Just like taxes and tolls, No one laughs at Texas and gets away with it.
