IOTL in a 1908 interview Porfirio Diaz said that Mexico was finally ready for democracy and that he would retire and allow other candidates to run for the presidency. However in 1910 when elections came he decided to run again but allow Francisco Madero run against him. He won the election in what most have called a rigged election. This is what most historians see as the spark of the Mexican Revolution.
My question is what if Porfirio Diaz never said he was planning on introducing democracy to Mexico? How long would his regime last? Would his regime last until his death or sooner? Might he live longer without the pressure of active revolution? If his regime lasts until his death what would happen?
