WI Eisenhower sought BOTH party's nominations, either 48 or 52

i have heard that Earl Warren had sought and I think got both parties' nominations for California govenror.

Suppose the General noting the depth of division in America had run for both nominations.

I suspect he could have got them.

Possibly the election is in effect for Vice President

Warren relied on the unusual California practice of cross-filing. (It was introduced by the Progressives who dominated California in the Hiram Johnson era in order to weaken party machines, but had the effect that often general elections were uncontested, because the incumbent--as by far the best-known candidate--frequently won the primaries of both parties. It has since been abolished.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-filing In most states, you can't seek the simultaneous nomination of more than one party.

It's my understanding that Eisenhower had been offered both nominations, but, made his choice based on the fact that the most important thing to him was the formation of NATO/strong hedge against communism. As the Dems were very favorable to this idea, but the GOP was more isolationist, chose to win as an "R" so he could manipulate the party and prevent opposition to his favorite toy.

Nobody can "offer" anyone, even Ike, a party's nomination. He had to work very hard to defeat Taft in 1952.

Theoretically, there could be a successful "draft Eisenhower" movement in both parties, but in the end he would have to pick one. The Democrats wouldn't accept him if he ran under a Republican platform and vice versa.
