WI: Eisenhower Retires in 1956

Citing his health problems, President Dwight D. Eisenhower retires from the presidency after only one term in office.

Does Nixon run, despite being more youthful and possibly seeming even more inexperienced? Does Eisenhower's early retirement give him a boost in the polls? Does Eisenhower do more to help than OTL? Or does the Republican field open up to new people? Who else could have succeeded Eisenhower? Would Eisenhower be quick to support a different nominee, especially if Nixon was defeated? Is Adlai Stevenson still re-nominated? If not, who else could the Democrats pick? If Stevenson is re-nominated, are his chances in the White House greater?

Nixon runs and wins both the nomination and the election. I think he then starts escalating the US involvement in Vietnam.

I think Nixon would get the nomination, but Dewey may try and fail to get it. If I remember correctly, when Ike was thinking about not running in '56 he wanted Dewey to be his replacement, but a few people in the republican were not thrilled with the idea.

I do think it possible Stevenson would manage to get the democratic nod again, but I don't think he can beat Nixon.

Dewey vs. Stevenson would be fun for irony purposes - both most recent two-time losing nominees going against each other.
