In November 1936 King Edward VIII expressed his wish to marry Mrs Violet Wallis-Simpson a commoner and twice divorcee... His wish was opposed by the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin who tried to persuade him to reconsider.
However under pressure from the King the Prime Minister agreed to consult the Governments of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia and South Africa about the matter. He presented them with 3 options A) Edward marries Mrs Simpson and she will be Queen B) Edward marries Mrs Simpson in a morganatic marriage C) Edward will abdicate and marry Mrs Simpson. Canada Australia anad South Africa supported that Edward should abdicate while. N. Zealand supported that a morganatic marriage could be possible...
WI the British commonwealth Govenments had agreed to a morganatic marriage thus allowing Edward to remain King?
How is this altering history? Any thoughts?
