WI Edward VIII was allowed to have a morganatic marriage?

In November 1936 King Edward VIII expressed his wish to marry Mrs Violet Wallis-Simpson a commoner and twice divorcee... His wish was opposed by the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin who tried to persuade him to reconsider.
However under pressure from the King the Prime Minister agreed to consult the Governments of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia and South Africa about the matter. He presented them with 3 options A) Edward marries Mrs Simpson and she will be Queen B) Edward marries Mrs Simpson in a morganatic marriage C) Edward will abdicate and marry Mrs Simpson. Canada Australia anad South Africa supported that Edward should abdicate while. N. Zealand supported that a morganatic marriage could be possible...

WI the British commonwealth Govenments had agreed to a morganatic marriage thus allowing Edward to remain King?
How is this altering history? Any thoughts?

In Wallace Simsons case, the Morganatic Marriage wouldn't have been but a mere formality since she was infertile due to a botched abortion anyway (there were widespread rumours that she had an affair with Count Galeazzo Ciani before this abortion).

At least there were precedents in the family...

Not in the British branch. In fact, (having just checked) the concept is completely alien to Britain. The Royals have been marrying commoners for generations (John of Gaunt, Edward IV, Henry VIII, the speculation of the Elizabeth I/Cecil match, George VI, everyone since Elizabeth II).

The closest is a Maternal Great-Grandfather of Edward VIII. It's mainly a German or Russian thing.

Not happening given the morality of the day. Even more because it happened to be That Woman (a "respectable whore" would have been better), not just any woman. For over a decade the Establishment was quietly hoping that he would not become King because of his serious character flaws, and the Simpson imbroglio provided the perfect opportunity to get rid of him. There is no way to keep him on the throne with a 1936 POD. It would have to be before 1931, which is when he met Simpson.

Well N. Zealand anperhaps Ireland werent completely negative on the prospect of a morganatic marriage... I wonder if they could exploit the romance of Edward VIII and cause a rift in the commonwealth... especially Ireland... they could seek indipendence from UK on this pretext... If i remember correctly Ireland ratified Edward's abdication a day later than the other dominions so technically Edward was still King of Ireland for that day... I wonder if Valera never ratified rhe abdication instument and left Edward as King of Ireland he would have severed the ties with UK... Edward would be King of Ireland and perhaps in a few years Valera organises a referendum kicks him out and proclaims a republic...
Plausible? or ASB?

Valera delayed ratification as a petty point-scoring thing against the UK, not because he had any strong opinions on the Abdication itself. What you suggest is ASB- a relatively young (only 42) playboy whose mistress is an American nouveau-riche commoner living in a quasi-theocracy?

Well my thought was that Valera could use Edward as a vessel to kick out brits from ireland...
Like: Edward is King of Ireland>Valera holds a referendum about the King>people dont like him and his bride>Edward is kicked out>Valera proclaims a republic.

Still ASB for a multitude of political and religious reasons.
