The throne will probably go to a cousin, possibly after a certain amount of confusion and chaos.

Well, I was thinking more about what happens now that Edward III has been killed and can't establish England as a force in Europe...

I think England already is something of a force in Europe. A lot depends on what his younger brother John (eleven in 1327) does.

John died 1336 OTL, so its anyone's guess what kind of king he'd be if he lived.

For the easiest way to get a list of the male Plantagents.

*cough*

His brother John_of_Eltham,_Earl_of_Cornwall is still alive.
He died in OTL in 1336. If not him, well, given that Roger Mortimer is technically in command of the English Kingdom at the time, through the Queen (sortof), well, i guess it will depend on what he will do.

This isn't my area of expertise by a long way, but I doubt Douglas would have neccessarily wanted to kill the King. He's much more valuable as a captive than a corpse. Not just for the quite literal king's ransom he would bring, but also for propaganda coup. And tbh, it's a much more interesting divergence than Edward's death.
