WI: Edward I dies on the 9th crusade?

While still a Prince, Edward took part in the 8th and 9th crusade, during which he was stabbed by an assasian with a supposedly poisoned blade. Edward was weakend and stayed at Acre for many months but eventualy recovered and went on to become Edward I.

However what would have happend had the blade been poisonous enough to kill him? I presume that, given that Henry III is on his way out at this point there would be a regency (led by Robert Burnell and Edmund Plantagenet perhaps?) for King Alphonso I.

I also reckon that, without Edwards force of personality, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd would be able to consolidate and hold onto his principalty of Wales even if Roger Mortimer and the other marcher lords were raiding his terrritory.

What other things would be effected by the death of Edward I before he becomes king?

we have, for the time being, a very happy Wales. iff Llywelyn manages to secure his realm for his son it could last longer.

Schotland on the other hand, might have to deal with the throne issue on their own

ow...and William wallace doesnt die :D :D :D

Alphonso? What Alphonso? He won't even be born ITTL. It'll be Henry IV (OTL Henry of England, 1267-1274), and then, if he still dies young as IOTL, presumably Eleanor (OTL 1264-1298).

As de Montfort is out of the way, could Mortimer have a go for it himself? but as things didn't go too well for Simon...

It might last longer but given the long tradition for split inheritance in Wales, it will need to be defended from second sons as well as from the English. Adopting inheritance by eldest son only may take generations to embed entirely.
