WI: East Austria and greater West Germany

WI due to a diplomatic incident in Vienna or Stalin having unreasonable demands, Austria isn't unified and Finlandized?

Most people on this board think that this would result in the Western part of Austria being merged with west Germany due to it being not viable without the Eastern half of the country.


How would Cold War politics develop from there?

You'd probably be more likely to get three Germany's than Austria not unified and neutralized. I could see an Austro-Bavaria (neutral), Soviet East Germany, and Democratic/Capitalist West Germany sans Bavaria.

Not exactly, as OP seems to be suggesting it would only be the merger of the Western occupation zones.

Exactly. This was discussed for some time in OTL, but they dropped it when Stalin played cool because a unified neutral Austria was in his interest.
