The cassette revolutionized quite a lot. It was the first format to really challenge records, seems to have even become more popular with the younger generation than that format by the 1980's, and the ability to have music be portable outside of a radio was ground breaking and paved the way for future developments there (the MP3 and iPod, for example). And perhaps that portability invigorated the younger generation by granting them a good deal of freedom.
Is there a way for the Cassette Tape/a reasonably portable Magnetic tape format to rise to prominence earlier?
