WI: Earlier mongol-esque invasion?

Can we possible envision an invasion by a steppe tribe on a Ghengis Khan scale before the original?

For example a Go-turk invasion in the 6th or 7th century? Other tribe?

What would it take, what would the consequences be?

Obviously is all contextual so lets look at some moments when an invasion might be more interesting:
-arab invasions
-fall of the roman empire
-other?

For the fall of the roman empire, the Huns might have been a turkic tribe, so, it's already done. Qin and Zhao states of the Warring States era state fought against the Xiongnu very often. But it would be difficult to do an invasion on the Mongols state as you would need a Khan (i take the basic mongol title for the sake of simplicity) to unit all the various tribe, even wider than it's direct cultural neighboors.

Actually, I heard Khan is not a mongol noble title, but way older - early turkish peoples, like Xiongnu, created it. And it spread to peoples of the plains...
