WI: Dogger Bank is terraformed to become an actual island.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogger_Bank

The near 17,000sq km Dogger Bank.

What nation would have the motivation to raise this bank and turn it into habitable territory (of some kind at least), at what time and could it have been done and if so, would it have been succesful.

Or would such a large project be simply fantasy and destined to fail, or if it succeeded, cause catestrophic consequences?

The motivation would be the North Sea Gas Fields, and the only country that could do it without having to fight a war first would be the UK. This should be in A.S.B.

I thought about putting it there but then i did think about some of the other crazy actual projects that where proposed around world war II (i.e. the draining of the medetarranian) and all of a sudden this one didn't seem quiet as crazy.

Interesting idea but unfortunately the area you're talking about is an important fishing ground.

If the UK did this off their own bat, the UK would have every nation bordering the North Sea up in arms about a loss if fishing rights etc and kill off a fair whack of their own fishing industry. Not only that if the UK started doing this project some other areas in the North Sea would suddenly be at risk of being fought over for development such as Cleaver Bank, Friesse Front etc. This would cause disputes or even conflict between the Belgiums, German and Dutch.

As for doing this, I'd suspect somewhere post 60's on wards plausible.

As for how quick . . . well the new Kansai Airport sits on a man made island 2.5 miles x 1.5 miles in area and took around 3 years to create with a workforce of 10,000

One caveat though . . . how does the UK get this new land recognized as sovereign British land as the UN rarely recognizes new reclaimed land especially with around half a dozen angrey countries protesting?

Regards filers

Doesn't have to be neccesarily british and the timeline is literally anything after 1900. I do wonder how though.

Depending on the tides Dogger Bank is between 50 and a 100 feet (15 to 30 meters) below sea level. Thats a hell of a big sea wall.

A federal EU could do this, or a victorious New Order, or a Communist one world government. But why? Any power capable has far better land reclamation spots elsewhere.

I am imagining a maniacal pan-European ruler who is absolutely fanatical about Stone Age archaeology and decides that he wants to dam off Doggerland to get at all the finds still buried under it

I don't think anything would get much further than the proposal stage, but if there was a use, maybe there's a united Germany in the Cold War thanks to Stalin taking and ethnic cleansing more of East Germany (and adding it to Poland and Czechoslovakia) creating more Germany refugees, and to weaken the German state and prevent its large bloc of people calling for the return of German lands from causing trouble, they propose the creation of a neutral state out of Doggerland which would be a NATO protectorate. Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and Denmark would all have interests in this state.

Or maybe a Jewish scientist ends up finding the idea an incredibly intriguing place to create the Jewish state as an alternative to Zionism and idea gets some serious traction in the 19th and 20th centuries until the plan is actually put into action.
