WI Doge Maurizio Galbaio returns Venice to Byzantine sovereignity?

Maurizio Galbaio was raised to the dogeship in 764 at a time when two tribunes were being elected annually to check the power of the doge. His predecessor had been from a pro-Lombard faction, but Maurizio was a wealthy man from pro-Byzantine Heraclea. He opposed both the strong republican faction, which supported moving towards de facto independence, and the pro-Frankish and pro-Lombard factions. He received the titles of Magister Militum per Venetiae and Consul from the Roman Emperor Leo IV...
WI Doge Galbaio being pro-Byzantine surrendered his powers to the Eastern Roman Emperor? How is that altering History? Any thoughts?

Venice was a de jure part of the Roman Empire until into 10th century, so I'm not sure how much difference it would make.

More taxes and additional troops from Venice and Dalmatia if Venice is de facto sudued to the ERE... By being de jure independent the Doge could "ignore" the Emperor's requests but he could still get some honorific titles from him...

I'm going to guess that the general lack of Byzantine assertion of control probably means that when the Venetians execute the coup, there will be much protest and little action.

By the time Maurizio Galbaio became Doge Emperor Constantine V had beaten Bulgarians and the Arabs were peaceful... So if Venice joins Byzantine Empire de jure and de facto and that causes troybles to Doge Galbaio and the pro-Byzantine party the Emperor has some troops spare to send there and impose Byzantine rule by force...
