After Hitler commits suicide, Admiral Doenitz is his hand-picked successor and Goebbels is named Chancellor. What if after Goebbels commits suicide, Doenitz makes a deal with Crown Prince Wilhelm and Prince Louis Ferdinand to restore the monarchy and then resign in the faint hope that maybe when Germany unconditionally surrenders, the U.K., France, and the U.S. might treat Germany a bit better if it has a government that's not associated with the Nazis? How do you think the Allies will react? Could the monarchy be the government of Germany once the Allied occupation is over, at least in the west?

Personally, I don't think Doenitz or the Hohenzollerns have any illusions that the monarchy will last during the occupation. However, I think the Hohenzollerns would have the faint hope that after the occupation is over, the monarchy will be allowed to be restored again or at least be put to a plebiscite. Btw, if I haven't made it clear enough, Doenitz restores the monarchy purely out of pragmatism, not any love for it.
