WI: Disney animated Lord of the Rings?

Disney would no doubt try to shoehorn an entire 1500 page novel into a single 90 min animated film, which would completely destroy the narrative structure of the story. They also wouldn't be able to resist the urge to relentlessly whore LOTR with endless DVD cheapquels like they did with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

I never saw any BatB and Simba's Pride was a good movie. The Aladdin sequels had plenty of good moments.

Disney can do sequels well it just can't do them consistently.

Earlier; instead of Fantasia, with Mickey returning the ring.

But the songs would have been delightful.

That would be mighty impressive consdering that Tolkein hadn't finished writing it at that point:p.

But yeah, they'd treat it as a children's fairy tale and it would be ghastly.

This.

The real question is: If Disney made an animated version of The Lord of the Rings, what would happen to the franchise afterwards? Peter Jackson would never get his hands on it. There'd be a ride in Disneyland. Eowyn would technically be a Disney princess. And The Lord of the Rings would be forever consigned as children's fantasy, perhaps crippling the genre as we know it.

Eowyn would still be the best Disney princess, though.

What about Arwen? ;)

Yeah, It's a good thing that Disney never got the rights to this franchise...

I never saw any of the BATB or LK sequels, so I can't speak from experience, my point was just that The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are rightly considered to be candidates for masterpiece status, particularly BATB, which was the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture, and yet they couldn't seem to leave well enough alone.
