The War of the Austrian Succession was quite successful for France - it won many victories, and occupied the entire Austrian Netherlands (modern Belgium.)

However, in the resulting treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, France restored all its conquests, coming away with no gains. Apparently, King Louis XV was happy with having a hexagon-shaped kingdom of France. As one might expect, the decision was rather unpopular back home.

What would have happened if Louis XV had indeed tried to keep his conquests? Presumably, they'd lose Cape Breton Island 18 years early as a result (Britain gave it back for France to withdraw from the Netherlands.)
