WI different Niihau Incident?

WI instead of basically siding with the downed Japanese Zero pilot and running amok the 3 Japanese people on Niihau island acted differently, perhaps told the whole truth to the other islanders for starters?

If the very first, small-scale meeting between Japanese-Americans and Japanese military had gone differently would the internment of Japanese-Americans elsewhere have been different?

Since the whole event was an enormous nothing involving two people on an island which had no idea war had begun and no one involved was actually charged with any crimes a change in treatment of the Japanese-American population seems very unlikely.

While Hawila Kaleohano didn't know about Pearl Harbour when he relieved the pilot of his pistol and papers everybody certainly knew about it that night because of the reports on a battery powered radio, and pilot told all 3 Japanese speakers during the day for Dec 7th. The breakout etc didn't occur until the 12th so I don't think ignorance is an excuse for any of the active participants.

There's no way for the Niihau Natives to contact anyone.

they have no Phones, Aylmer Robinson was not allowed to go to the island for his weekly visit, and the only other way is a rather risky 10 hour boat ride.

the Out break only happened because the Guards they had set up were slacking off.

Harada and one of the pilots overpowered the only guard who was taking his duties seriously.
If all Five where actually there, then the events from the 12th on probably wouldn't have taken place, or if they did, it would probably end with the pilots and Harada over powered, and possibly killed, and the last pilot under closer watch.

sense Robinson still hasn't shown up, I suppose it would be reasonable for them to still send the Boat out to contact Robinson and the military.

I suppose the easiest way to do things would for the navy to let Aylmer Robinson have his weekly visit to the Island.

the Pilots would have been sent back with him, and presumably some sort of guards, and turned over to the Military.

the peaceful ends would probably decrease the likelihood of the internment camps, although I don't imagine that it would be much of a decrease.

Interesting that the IJN had no idea people lived on the island but the IJN record in such matters could be startlingly poor. The IJN analysis of the Aleutians prior to the diversion intended to help at Midway...

In fairness, the island was closed off to the general public in 1915, so it's not like the Japanese could send spies there.

No way in 25 years to determine if there was anyone living on the island...

Aylmer Robinson was the only person who got to choose who could go to the island, and for the most part he only gave permission to family members of the Niihauians.

The Government, for the most part, didn't interfere, sense his family owned the islands.

Firstly, I want my own personal island, that would be so sweet!

Secondly, while nobody was charged the pilot was killed, Yoshio Harada topped himself, Irene Harada was imprisoned for 31 months and Ishimatsu Shintani was interned. It appears that nobody got off scott free, especially considering as others have pointed out the minor nature of the incident.

Still, wasn't the primary effect of the Niihau incident the creation of a stereotype that all Japanese-Americans were potential fifth columnists? If it doesn't happen, what's the likely effect on the internments?

There wasn't any evidence that the Japanese-Americans were disloyal and we all know how much that helped them avoid internment...
