WI Dieppe cancelled

With the fiasco of Dieppe the consolation line touted (or 'spin') is that 'we learned how not to do it'.
That is - the Allies realised they needed more naval support, and not to attack a port.
But, is that just what was said after the event, if Dieppe was cancelled for one whatever reason would D-day have been different??
For example, would they have tried to seize Le Havre?

And, what would the troops who took part do, if not Dieppe? Another similar raid? Or extra landing for Torch?

FWIW I really think that Dieppe, despite being a costly disaster, provided a lot of information that simply couldn't be learned any other way.

So it wasn't a total loss...

It also gave the Allies some idea on how the Germans might react in the event of an invasion.

They might have. A port would required to land supplies and more troops. Dieppe showed that the Germans could knock out some of the installations before they could be captured. Consequently the Allies built the Mulberry harbours instead trying to capture a port.

Unlightly. Diepee was in August 42. Torch was in November 42.

Lord Haw-Haw's joke

Hmmm, don't forget the massive morale problems the 2nd Canadian Div had after being cooped up training in the UK for 2 yrs with nothin to show for it- if Op JUBILEE hadn't been mounted, these restless young soldiers (whom Lord Haw-Haw targheted with his sarcastic broadcast that, given the Canadians' chronic AWOL, discipline & alcohol problems, the British could win the war by giving each Canuck a motorbike &a bottle of whiskey, tellin em Berlin was out of bounds, then they'd all be there within 48 hrs :( ) would've needed to have been sent somewhere else imminently to let em get into the action instead of just sittin around bored out of their skulls...
