With the fiasco of Dieppe the consolation line touted (or 'spin') is that 'we learned how not to do it'.
That is - the Allies realised they needed more naval support, and not to attack a port.
But, is that just what was said after the event, if Dieppe was cancelled for one whatever reason would D-day have been different??
For example, would they have tried to seize Le Havre?
And, what would the troops who took part do, if not Dieppe? Another similar raid? Or extra landing for Torch?
