Who would George Bush pick as new Vice-President?

This could be important for the 2008 Republican nomination, too.

Would this make it easier or harder for him to make the House and the Senate cooperate with him?

Any other thoughts?

Section 2 of the 25th Amendment provides that "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."

It would be very interesting to see how the Democratic Congress would react. Congress has both the right and the duty to reject an ill-considered judicial or administrative nomination. But should Congress reject an ill-considered veep? How would it even decide who's a good one and who's not?

The only precedents are Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller; before the 25th Amendment, the VP office was just left vacant if one died. Both were well respected and competent. Here's what Wikipedia says about how controversial the 2 VP nominations were:

Following Spiro Agnew's resignation two days earlier, President Richard Nixon nominated long-time Michigan congressman Gerald Ford to succeed Agnew as Vice President on October 12, 1973.
The United States Senate voted 92 to 3 to confirm Ford on November 27, and on December 6 the House confirmed him 387 to 35. Ford was sworn in later that day at the United States Capitol.
By becoming President, Gerald Ford left the Vice Presidency vacant. After considering Melvin Laird and George H. W. Bush, on August 20, 1974, President Ford nominated former New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to succeed him as Vice President.
After a long and contentious investigation, particularly to ensure that his family's business dealings would not cause conflicts of interest, Rockefeller was confirmed 90-7 by the Senate on December 10, 1974. He was then confirmed 287-128 by the House on December 19, 1974, and sworn into office that same day.

Well, who would W. propose?

The best choice would have probably been Condoleeza Rice ...

Who ever it would be would immediately declare their candidacy for president (if they weren't already) if they weren't just an elder statesman place holder. The second alternative is one of the existing candidates and if they were the case one could almost call the primary now.

One things for sure, whoever it is the conspiracy theorists would have a field day. Remember when Reagan was shot?

I guess that he would chose one of the republican frontrunners (Gulliani or McCain) but given Bush... ehm.. popularity, would that be good for the candidate?

If W wants someone who's not going to run for President, his best options are Bob Dole and Condoleeza Rice (I believe her when she says she doesn't want the job, esp. since her personality type is more follower than leader).

If W wants someone who's is going to run for President, then things get really tricky. Some of the GOP candidates, like McCain, are known to hate his guts and vice versa. Even among the ones who get along with him personally, most have already started running on the "I'm not W" theme. Maybe the best bet here would be Tom Ridge -- not running for President right now, but would make a viable candidate, and couldn't be hurt (anymore than he already is) by association with W.

I have to say that I assume that Congress would have to confirm any candidate GW Bush offered unless it were totally crazy. In the aftermath of such a tragedy as it would be seen the pressure would be overwhelming.

And then a obvious joke about non-crazy Bushies:D

My monthly act of thread-necromancy...

Any new thoughts?

Perhaps Mitt Romney? He was 2nd place in the 2008 Primaries, and seeing as McCain isn't likely, perhaps him?

It's likely he'd lose to Obama (or Clinton, depending on the butterflies) that year and as such likely not run again in 2012, which might lead to *shudders* Santorum getting the nod
