WI Designated Survivor in real life?

Designated Survivor is a American TV show where the HUD secretary becomes president after everyone dies because of a bombing of the U.S Capitol.
So what if in 2017 during President Trump's address everyone but Ben Carson gets wiped out? What would President Carson possibly do?

The show does a pretty good job of laying out exactly what needs to happen if such event occured: ensure the country is secure, request the States' Governors to appoint new Senators, and set an election to reconstitute the House.

I'm sure in this scenario a President Carson wouldn't veer too much away from this course.

Problem: on January 20th Ben Carson had not yet been confirmed in his office? Your question is a good one. I am not sure if the Constitution would cover this situation.

I thought he was referring to the address Trump gave to the joint session of Congress earlier this month?

Except it was the VA Secretary David Shulkin who was the Designated Survivor, not Mr. Carson who had not been confirmed as the HUD Secretary at the time of the 2017 State of the Union address.

Ah. Well that would change the OP.

Actually, it'd make it more like the show since the protagonist was in the process of being replaced.

If the out going administration had the designated survivor then how long would he be the boss for after all an apposing party won. As I see it would not the winning party take over on the appointed time would they not have some one already approved by the senate early
