WI: Deseret becomes a state?

Not really ASB, just really unlikely. If the Mormons get more converts across a wider spectrum of the US I think it becomes possible.

The US is a nation of Straight lines. We will not stand for those unnatural curves. They ruin the other states borders with un-neatness.

That was never their borders. Heck, even today Utah only has five percent of their territory not under the direct control of Federal agencies and Native tribes. If something like this happened though, I suppose we might see them becoming a Mormon minority state as others pour in.

The US wouldn't allow it. America was very anti-Mormon. Hence even the name "Mormon"; Mormon is a pagan idol, and that name was used to mock the followers of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Hence why the Mormons fled to Mexico in the middle of land no one else wanted (until someone finally wanted). Hence why to become accepted, Mormonism had to give up its eccentricities like polygamy and move towards being a more traditionalist Christian sect. The US will never give the Mormons that much power, and would be fearful that the Church of Latter Day Saints would try to pull some shenanigans of political power.

Uhh, no? The name Mormon comes from the Book of Mormon. You're not that far off on the rest of your post, but that bolded part is clearly wrong.

Question: What does Mormon actually mean? I've never read the Book of Mormon or know anything about it, which is weird since one of my closest friends is a Mormon.

According to the Book of Mormon, Mormon was a prophet of the Nephites and, along with his son, Moroni[1], the compiler of and commentator upon many of the texts that would become the Book.

People called the LDS followers 'Mormons'...because it was in the name of their holy text, logically enough.

[1] Who is also the angel that Joseph Smith said revealed the golden plates on which the Book was inscribed to him.

I think you're think of Mammon, which was the representation of greed or something like that. Mormon comes from the Prophet Mormon and his son Moroni. And also the fact that their book is the Book of Mormon.
