WI: Deng Xiao Ping Assassinated, Hua Guofeng Chairman

What will China look like today if the headlines a few years ago looked like this:

People's Daily
February 21, 1973

Comrades, most disturbing news. On this day, an Il-14 was sent from Beijing to Jiangxi to take Comrade Deng Xiaoping back to Beijing to resume his work. In flight, there was a mysterious engine failure over Anhui Province, leading it to crash into an agricultural field near Hefei. There were no survivors. In these difficult times we must look to Chairman Mao for leadership on the correct socialist path...

Our beloved Chairman Mao has died peacefully today at the age of 82 in Beijing's People's Liberation Army Primary Hospital. Comrade Hua Guofeng has assumed the posts of Chairman of the Communist Party of China and the Military Affairs Commission shortly after the death of Chairman Mao. He is expected to be named General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in the next few weeks. Long Live the People's Republic!

People's Daily
December 18th, 1979

Chairman Hua calls for all Chinese to resume production in state owned industry and collective farms in the wake of the devastation of the Cultural Revolution. "The Gang of 4's rule of terror is over. The Chinese people have stood up for the second time!" Our Chairman staunchly refuses to succumb to the temptations of reformers and foreign imperialists. "The market reform experimentations," Chairman Hua declared, "were failures. They have not significantly increased industrial production in either the People's industries nor the collective farms."
