WI: Democratic Nominee (or POTUS) Jefferson Davis?

Assuming Jefferson Davis has a slightly better overall military and political career let's make him a popular candidate for president in either 1856 or 1860, then discuss the possibilities.

Three interesting options:

1. He wins, becomes POTUS, but secessionists go to war anyway. This leaves him in a tight spot. What would he do? What happens if the President is offered the Presidency of the C.S.A. in exchange for resigning the office of POTUS? Has there ever been any discussion on here of a POTUS seceding with the South?

2. He loses. What happens if the choice for President of the Confederate States was almost President of the U.S.? This makes the ACW even more political (if that's even possible) than OTL. What happens?

3. The election is a deadlock and the results are contested. I doubt the South will hesitate in preparing to secede in the event of a contested election and this could bring the nation to war or the brink of it before the President is even decided...

Please discuss.

At first I thought it would be most interesting if Davis gets a close second place in the election. But then I realized that in order to nearly win, he'd have to make friends with a lot of powerful people in the north, and if he does that he'd probably hesitate to declare war on the north.

Of course, THAT'S a way different United States...

Oh yeah, definitely. TBH, though, Jeff Davis COULD have won, perhaps, if the Republican challenger was weak enough. Don't think he'd be a very effective or competent President, though.
