WI: Death of Constantine

Suppose that Emperor Constantine is killed during his civil war with Maxentius, either during the battle of Milvian Bridge or perhaps earlier. Thus, there is no vision of the Cross, no Damascene conversion, and when all is said and done, Maxentius wears the Roman laurels. While there is an obvious negative impact to the development of Christianity, would this prevent the Christian faith from still becoming one of the premier if not the premier religion of Late Antiquity Rome? How would this reverberate in the secular governance of the Empire?

Though I am not a historian of Rome myself, I am very interested in what might happen if Constantine died.
