Do you mean Hellespont...?
Well, actually Darius indeed could prevent Alexander from crossing to Asia in the first place, at this time Persian navy was surely stronger than their Macedonian counterparts...
But unfortunately, as mentioned many times in ancient sources, Darius III was too overconfident...

IMO Darius was actually too timid.

It's not impossible: Memnon of Rhodes defeated a Macedonian army led by Parmenion in the same area only a few years before Alexander crossed. And it's not like the Persian army was completely incompetent. They had excellent Iranian heavy cavalry and a large number of Greek hoplite mercenaries. Add a good general, like Memnon, and Alexander is in a world of hurt.

Give him supreme command of the westen satrapies immediately and Alexander can be stopped, although probably not in a straight up battle. Memnon advocated a scorched Earth strategy while using the superior Persian Navy to cut off Alexander from Macedonia.

The likely end result would be Alexander being forced to return broke with a battered army and no longer able to afford his Greek mercenaries. At this time we can expect another Greek revolt.
