WI: Darius III Victorious at Gaugamela

What would the results have been if Darius III had beaten Alexander the Great at the battle of Gaugamela?

I assume Alexander III (not the Great this time) is killed. Given his propensity to lead from the front, this is not a unlikely assumption.

Actually, in that case, the Macedonian defeat might be comprehensive. If Alexander dies, the Companion attack most likely has failed. This means they cannot double back to save Parmenion's left wing at the battle. If Parmenion also dies, leadership of the army is shattered along with the army itself.

Applying some Persian wank here, I think Darius III can take back Syria and the eastern parts of Asia Minor without too much trouble in the aftermath of the battle. This will mostly consist of cities changing sides when the Achaemenid armies approach, not a lot of pitched battles. Macedonian control was most likely still very superficial. This is the same way in which Alexander captured the region the years before (Tyre was the exception to this rule).

Taking back Egypt will probably more difficult, but the coutry was in rebellion during most of the Persian period before anyway, so it's not a great loss.

Regarding western Asia Minor, it's difficult to see the Persian retrenching to their former borders, with the Greek towns and cities having regained some kind of their cherished freedom. And Macedonia might be reeling from the disaster in Mesopotamia, but Antipater still has a decent army at hand in occupied Greece.

Anyway, after another decade, Darius III will have to face another threat on his eastern borders: the Mauryan Empire in India.
