In 513 BC, Darius I the Great, King of Kings of the Achaemenid Empire, embarked on a campaign in Scythia after stabilizing his empire and instituting several economic, military, and administrative reforms. The Scythians forced Darius to pursue across their lands, where they famously said that if Darius wanted to bring them to battle, they should find the tombs of their kings and destroy them. It was at this point that a Scythian detachment arrived at the bridge Darius had built across the Danube, and proposed that the Greek Darius had left behind there destroy the bridge, leaving Darius and his army to face certain destruction. The Greek commanders debated this proposal fiercely, but they did not remove the bridge. Darius retreated across the Danube and therefore to safety. What if the Greek commanders decided to destroy the bridge and strand Darius in Scythia, in which Darius gets killed and his army faces certain destruction? Would Ionia revolt 14 years early? Would the various peoples under the rule of the Achaemenids have a shot at independence? Who would succeed Darius? And how would any Persian invasion of Greece be different from OTL, if it happens at all? Who will be regent?
