WI Dan Quayle becomes President in 1992?

In 8 January 1992 President Bush had a slight health problem while visiting Japan... He recovered fast however...
WI This problem was a serious one and Bush died making Quayle President?
What happens then? Who would be Quayle's VP?
How is that altering History? Any thoughts?

President Dan Quayle means that George W. Bush isn't the dumbest man to ever sit in the White House...

Dan Quayle is underrated. I'm not saying he's the best vice-president in the world or anything, but a large part of it stems from 1988. The Republican campaign team had briefing books on all the likely VP picks, and then Bush goes and picks Quayle and all they have is his profile in the Almanac and so the Democrats define Quayle and the Republicans do not.

That said, his image is pretty darn cemented by 1992, I imagine he either gets challenged in the primaries (and boy that would be a crazy run—no one has time or money, including Quayle) or he goes on to be defeated by Bill Clinton a few months down the road.

He simply made too many gaffes to be considered seriously. Not that that in itself is an impediment to attaining higher office by any stretch...

Because of Quayle's image, I would imagine that Perot has the potential to be a more serious challenger in the '92 election, especially if he doesn't do something similar to what he did in OTL by dropping out and re-entering, and avoids the gaffes he made along the campaign trail.

Just because somebody is bad at pronounciation does not mean they're stupid.

Ahem. . .

"The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century."

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit...Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe."

"I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix."

Anyone can mess up in situations like this. Not being able to speak well in public is not a sign of stupidity or anything like that. Quayle has proven in the last 15 years he was NOT stupid. But then some people will believe what they WANT to believe.

Well it certainly throws the Republican primary into turmoil. In OTL, only Pat Buchanan decided to challenge Bush. Or at least he was the only guy to offer a serious challenge(I don't count the Mike Gravels or Alan Keyes' of this world as serious challenges).

In this case, I suspect a whole lot of Republicans would have thrown their hat into the ring because Quayle had such high negatives and people would be so sure he would lose to whoever the Dems put up.
