WI: Czech Avia B.35

By the time the Wehrmacht invaded Czechoslovakia, the production of the Me 109E variant was just beginning, so the Luftwaffe didn't really have the new variants yet.

The most common variant would be the C and D variants when the German Army invaded Czechoslovakia.

The proposed fighter would be slightly faster than the Me 109C (495 km vs 470 km), but slower than the Me 109E (530 km vs 495 km). The most common variant of the Junkers Ju 87 is the B variant, which is about 100 km slower than the proposed Avia B.35 (390 km).

Also, the most common medium bomber is the Heinkel He-111E.

Much thanks:D

Looks like a decent late 1930s to 1940 fighter. Kind of P-36ish. Probably better than the Ms-406 because that thing was a beast to maintain.

Without knowing more about the plane itself, I would look to the P-36 as a model for coming up with your performance standards for your TL.

It doesn't look like it'd roll or yaw as well as the P-36 though, based on the proportions and layout (which was one of the reasons why the Hawk 75 was so disproportionately effective in the Battle of France.)

I'd say it'd be closer to the D.520 than the P-36 in terms of handling.

According to some sources Udet fly tested B-35 after March 1939 and and said it was better in handling then Me. Bulgarians received in early 40-ties 12 B-135 but at that time planes were already underpowered and under armed.

The engines were also unreliable. It was indeed fortunate that Rolls-Royce catered to the RN request for a 35 liter engine and had production available for export.

Unreliable? Engines served well until fall 1945 when Slovak fighter pilot on Avia B-534 scored last biplane fighter victory in history. ;) However power for further development was issue. There was way to get more power but needed time. Soviets got from their version of Hispano Suiza pretty decent engines for their Yaks. Of course with RR engine...

The Finns preferred to strip the engines from those Yaks to put in their Moranes.

Well Klimov played with them and increase the power. Some of the variants had however very short operational life.French were on similar way but 1940... And of course in Czechoslovakia work on increased output was in progress in 1938.

However interesting situation would be if Czechoslovakia started serial production in late 1937 or early 1938 with Munich and occupation of Czech lands still going as OTL.

New Slovak Air Force could theoretically end up with much more advanced planes as well as Germans may have something relatively easily manufactured which could be exported to its allies Hungary and maybe Romania and Finland as well.
