WI: Could the Soviet Union not be a superpower?

What would happen with the American Communist party? Would it be even less influential in this timeline.

My first response would be that that they would be in BETTER shape because of less Red Scare.

But, if the Soviets seem like less like the "tide of history" is on their side, that could reduce the appeal of the ideology.

Really, it could go either way, depending how people bounce to the new course of events.

So, I was thinking, would theChinese nationalist split with the US similar to what happened in OTL with the PRC and USSR? I was also thinking about what a Soviet collapse in the sixties would look like, thoughts?

Well, the us and the ussr are very different entities, to be allied with. Note the lack of border clashes between the US and Canada over the last one hundred years for example, compared to the USSR and China.

Still, if that is what you want for your timeline, it is certainly plausible.

On the other hand, what would be REALLY plausible, would be that if the threat from the Soviet Union goes away due to the Soviets collapsing that an alliance built on resisting that alliance becomes useless.

Any conflict of interests or ideas, or just competing national pride could lead to allies walking away from each other.

Pick one that fits your TL's point or tone, and go with that.

The first thing that pops into my mind, for one possible example is that very proud Chinese nationalists (racists?) would have been resentful for the whole period, depending on a foreign nation like the US, and the moment that that help is not desperately needed, tell the possibly overbearing Americans, (Ugly Americans? Round Eyes?) "THanks for the help, go home now, we'll call you if we need you again".

But you could easily have ether side be better or worse about it.

The easiest way to stop the Soviets becoming a Superpower is to stop World War II altogether. Have the French curbstomp Adolf when he tries to remilitarise the Rheinland.

Mind you, Colonialism hangs around much longer in TTL, with all that entails.
