What if the Guru Gobind Singh had not ordained that the book would be the eternal Guru of the Sikh religion, and instead had appointed a successor as the previous ones had? What effects would a continued line of human Gurus have had on subsequent Indian politics and Sikh philosophical development and spread?

Catastrophic. The Sikh holocaust of 1762 by the Durrani wiped out half of the Sikh population at the time, leaving only 25,000 Sikhs alive who only survived by fighting a continuous guerilla campaign against them, clinging on the hill forests for the next thirty years or so. A living Guru would have almost certainly been martyred at this time, and without the Guru Granth Sahib to hold them together, the faith itself would have probably been wiped out of existence.
