what if after the Confederate surrender all of the following were arrested and tried for treason:
Any Members of the Confederate Cabinet, including staffers
Any Members of the Confederate Congress, including staffers
All Confederate Governors
All Confederate state legislators
Anyone who achieved the rank of Colonel or higher in the Confederate Army (or Captain in the navy)
Anyone who commanded a Confederate raider
Anyone who had been in the pre-war army or navy, regardless of final rank.
The majority are convicted and jailed or executed by the end of 1866.
Military officers are tried in a court martial, civilians by a 12-man jury, but in the north.
How does reconstruction go? Pretty much the entire leadership of the Confederacy will have been removed, including the strongest voices of resistance against Reconstruction.
Does Reconstruction go better, or worse?
