I think some of its islands would have been under a different government, the British and US would have prevented all of its islands from going red creating a Crete based republic who's territory would have come to include Cyprus later.

Non-communist island regimes are a possibility but not a certainty. It would require heavy-handed intervention to establish a non-communist regime in the face of the mainland going the other way, as the Communist underground had bases on most of the islands as well as the mainland.

You mean at the end of the war, when the Germans retreated and the Communists made a grab ??

( IIRC, they'd kept a low profile during the Occupation, limiting their activities to vicious internal squabbles and informing on the Royalist Resistance... )

In OTL, they ran into 'garrison' of UK's 'Desert Rats', hardened from beating Rommel and, after the initial surprise, which seized core of several cities, were *seriously* out-matched. My father told ghastly tales of the no-quarter street-fighting, breaking through 'party walls' to prevent 'flanking', 'mouse-holing' snipers, even throwing German training grenades --Plus warning cry !!-- to flush insurgents for the cold-eyed RAF Regiment sharpshooters to despatch...
This tactic was called a 'Caught & Bowled'...
And hurling empty wine bottles --Plus warning cry !!-- when those training grenades ran short...

ATL, you'd have to ship-out about half that garrison to help in Italy. THEN the Communists take their shot, would be able to take and hold the cities. However, I don't think Churchill would have let it stand...
