Anyway, who would be the most likely candidates for the successor to Marcus Aurelius? Note: This is after the death of his other son as well. Let's say 176 so we don't have the issue of Commodus already being a co-emperor...
Personally I was thinking...
1. Marcus Petronius Sura Mamertinus
2. Tiberius Claudius Pompeianus (I know he was reluctant, but perhaps for his son?)
3. Lucius Antistius Burrus
These are all son-in-laws. As for non-relatives...
Avidius Cassius? Pertinax? Titus Pollio?
Any other thoughts are welcome. Also, any potential analysis of the effects of this is welcome too.
