WI Colonies were not partitioned at independence

A random question that I have often thought about is whether the various colonies would've been more stable both economically and politically as independent states if they had not been partitioned on religious lines (such as India) or local administrative boundaries (French Indo-China, French Equatorial Africa and French West Africa).

The big question is who would have enforced the pre-independence boundaries ? If its the pre-colonial masters, its not realy de-colonisation and if some sort of local strongman, you probably would just delay the problem (think sudan) and in the meantime you probably would suffer from much internal tension.

Well seeing all the violence and death that religious and/or cultural differences have brought about in OTL, I am not sure if keeping things together would alter this. It would have to be a mutual agreement of the people there and even then you may get 'friendly divorces' as happened in Czechoslovakia.
