WI: Clinton Skips the Iowa Caucus in 2008?

In the summer of 2007, Hillary Clinton knew that Iowa was her worst state, and a close advisor to the campaign counseled Clinton to skip the caucuses. This generated serious discussion within "HillaryLand", and if the sender hadn't randomly emailed the memo to an unconnected woman who leaked the story to the New York Times , Clinton might have done so. What would have happened if Clinton skipped the Iowa caucuses in 2008?

I think this would actually play well for Clinton. Whoever wins would not have the reputation of beating the frontrunner, and if Iowa is won by Edwards, which it probably would be (because both Clinton and Obama mostly focused on him in the state) he will explode anyway. Thoughts?

This is why she won in my Kerry TL. She probably would have gotten a bit of bad press but she'd not blow millions on a losing state. When Obama and Edwards come out of Iowa their momentum would be instantly stalled with crushing wins in New Hampshire and nevada, and if Obama lost iowa she'd get a narrow win in South Carolina also. From there she'd be able to get more delegates on Super Tuesday. If her lead's not strong enough, she might see her lead reduced after Super Tuesday and the fight would go on for a bit longer. Long story short she should have done this.

Any of these PODs should take into account that Clinton already had an Iowa 2008 strategy: her campaign had Tom Vilsack run as a favorite son/stalking horse.

Vilsack, of course, never made any headway in Iowa and dropped out of the race in early 2007 (endorsing Clinton, of course). It would be weird for Clinton to pull out of Iowa after that.

From what I've read, this mooted pullout wasn't seriously discussed until about June. I believe this is not consistent with your timeline of events.
