WI: Cleese swings the vote in 1997?

What if John Cleese's famous party political broadcast had swung the vote in 1997 towards the Lib Dems? As he said in the video nearly 50% of Britain would consider voting for them... what if they had?

It's a little hard for me to explain so here it is:

Could the Lib Dems feasibly win, or is this just Ianhbx style Ballsian wanking nonsense? :D

To get the 50% of Lib Dem voters I looked at the other preferences of those who voted for them in OTL, around 66% Labour and 20% Tory and got the other 33% based around that.

Using Electoral Calculus

Liberal Democrats - 585 seats
Labour- 44 seats
Others - 30 seats
Conservatives - 0 seats

In other words Cleese's advert inadvertantly takes Britain back to the mid-19th century. :p

Prime Minister Paddy Ashdown - now that's a scary thought.

Imagine the policies they could blast through parliament. Legal joint anyone?

Not the time or place for this debate but that's not really as scary a thought to me as you seem to be suggesting it should be.

The real problem would be the high percentage of no-marks and paper candidates the Lib Dems would now have as MPs and, logically, junior or even senior ministers. The IQ of Parliament just dropped.
