WI: Churchill, Monty and a bunch of US generals killed in 1945

Why do people continue to speak about Eisenhower dying? The original post makes it clear that Eisenhower left before Churchill and the others crossed the Rhine.

I think he means that if the Germans had shelled the house they where staying at before Eisenhower left.

If the Germans still had a few artillery pieces left to use.

With Churchill, Montgomery and sundry US generals being killed so close to the death of Roosevelt the conspiracy believers will be kept happy for decades. Everyone BUT the Germans will be blamed. (I blame DeGaul). Stalin will get twitchy and have a couple of hundred staff officers and senior NKVD shot just to be on the safe side. By the way the OP dosn't specify which US generals were with Churchill after leaving Ike's HQ but I can't see as shrewd a politician as Ike letting Churchill out of his sight while he's at the front. The consequences to his career of Churchill been hurt or worse would be catastrophic. The wispers that the saviour of western civilisation was killed at the front while Ike hid in his HQ miles behind the lines would ensure he was never given command of even a troop of Boy Scouts again. No political party would touch him with a hundred foot pole.

The Conservatives under Eden still go down to defeat by Labour in 1945. However when they return in 1950 or 1951 Eden has four years to grow as a PM, instead of being hedged in by WSC. Not needing to make a splashy success in foreign policy he adopts a more pragmatic reaction to the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, facing down the Suez Group who lack Churchill's tacit backing. His bout of ill-health is not as pronounced and he steps down as PM a few months later than the OTL. He is not succeeded by Macmillan but by RA Butler. The 1959 General Election is more closely fought and the Conservatives come out with a slender majority, which is wiped out in by-elections by 1962. Wilson become Labour PM in 1963 with a more solid majority. Tragically, England lose the 1966 World Cup Final to a disputed German goal, which at least spares us Skinner & Badiel & 40 years of hurt :D

Eisenhower - Future US President
Churchill - Current and Future British Prime Minister (in the 50's)
Montgomery - Current Army Group commander, Future BOAR commander, Future CIGS, Future Commander of WEU Forces.

Those three could have massive postwar changes.

It's more likely for them for to be killed while in German territory. Would make their deaths a lot less heroic, as well.

Never thought this might kill Ike's political future, but it very well may.

I wonder what would happen if the Germans somehow got hold of their bodies, or maybe even captured an injured Churchill on the east bank of the Rhine ?

I see long term changes ITTL. The Germans and the Conservative Party still lose in 1945. The USA still has a moderate Republican president from 1953 - 1961. Even if Taft wins he dies a few months after taking office. h His vice president would have been an Eastern moderate. A TL on this site suggested that Taft's running mate would have been the governor of New Jersey. The first big change I see is the election of 1960. Chances are that Richard Nixon is not the Republican nominee.

Oops, I went back and reread it carefully, instead of skimming over it. Ike does survive. Ike still would become President in 1952.
